Design Delivery Unit are appointed to deliver RSHP’s concept for the refurbishment of Bromley By Bow Gasworks Phase 1 and 2a. Located on a 24-acre site in East London, the masterplan seeks to restore and reuse seven Grade II listed gasholder frames as part of a mixed-use masterplan along the River Lea. Over 2000 new homes will be created across thirteen buildings ranging from 15–33 storeys.

The public will have access to the site for the first time in over 150 years, with the opportunity to see new communal amenities which include an accessible riverside park and flexible community space within the footprint of Gasholder No. 5, which was destroyed during the Blitz.

The Design Delivery Unit team will focus on delivering four buildings as part of Phase 1 and 2a; Gasholders G3, G4 and Panel buildings B3 and B4 providing 657 homes in a mixture of private, affordable and build-to-rent tenures.

The masterplan approach creates a “family of structures” across the site. It does so by means of only two distinct building typologies – Gasholder Buildings, which are typically lower and located centrally, and Panel Buildings, which have smaller footprints and are taller, located around the site perimeter.

The façade has been developed around two typologies as a family of buildings, the gasholders featuring handset brickwork and the panel buildings precast façades.
