The Brief

Design Delivery Unit were appointed by Crest Nicholson South West to optimise and deliver the planning scheme on this new urban quarter of Bristol. Historically the site was a large Victorian paint and varnish factory – influencing the use of colour in the scheme. The nature of the site in the heart of the city embodies a strong sense of character and affinity with the local artisan community, which has influenced both the design and detail of the project. Key to the success of the scheme is the combination of small artisan commercial units in amongst the residential development to create a sustainable community.

Added Value

In addition to the optimisation of the plans to suit the client’s brief, Design Delivery Unit’s real added value was realised through the design of the public realm. We undertook additional services beyond the working drawings to collaborate with the client and local artists to enhance the public realm design to stitch together the complex series of pedestrianised spaces for the residents and visitors.

Technical Challenges

The proximity to the tidal River Avon led to the whole development being located upon a large podium. The density of the site plan required input from Design Delivery Unit for an innovative construction strategy while achieving an efficient programme. Extensive coordination of multiple construction typologies including off-site timber frame & construction phased fire strategies were key to the project’s success.
