East Side Plaza, Gunwharf Quays
East Side Plaza was the last phase to be delivered of the regeneration at Gunwharf Quays. Designed by Broadway Malyan it was awarded Best Urban Regeneration Housing scheme 2004. It constitutes over three hundred apartments and eight retail units situated at the Historic Vernon Gate Entrance of the Naval Dockyard. The luxury apartments are designed in three distinct elements, The Blue Building, The Crescent and East Side Plaza Tower, a thirty storey glass cylindrical tower aligned at the apex of the Canalside dock overlooking the rest of the development and public Piazza. Rising to nearly 100 metres and comprising 29 stories No.1 Gunwharf Quays affords spectacular panoramic views over Portsmouth, the harbour and the Solent and is the tallest residential skyscraper on the South Coast of England. This landmark tower accommodates 141 studios, one, two and three bedroom apartments including two exclusive penthouses. It features luxurious interior specifications offering stylish high-rise living and is right on the doorstep of dozens of exciting attractions, including the yachting playground that is the Solent. The design of No.1 Gunwharf Quays is modelled on a large funnel that represents steam whilst the nearby Spinnaker represents sail. The team worked closely with Berkeley Homes to create and deliver a memorable landmark building which reflects the feelings of aspiration and confidence that surround the city of Portsmouth.
