Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford

Employed as executive architect for the Lord Ashcroft International Business School building at the Anglia Polytechnic (now Ruskin) University in Chelmsford. Responsible initially for overseeing the tender construction and commissioning phases of this 5,109 sq m (55,000 sq ft) mixed educational facility, we were subsequently appointed by William Verry Ltd to deliver the scheme. The new structure, which is adjoined to an existing building, comprises a five storey teaching block with various formats of study, seminar, lecture and hospitality space. The link between the two buildings is a striking radiused three dimensional stainless steel clad pod housing a tiered 164 seat auditorium beneath which the main entrance foyer to both the new and existing buildings is located. Features of the building include a Termodeck hollow core concrete floor structure employed as a radiant slab that is integral with the heating and ventilation system, motorised solar control blinds, profiled glass partition elements, an expressed steel frame and a structural glass deep cavity Bio-Climatic wall.
